Abstract

Our project examines global and local displacement, mobility, and placemaking among Latino/a communities in Chicago and its metro area.  Here is a unique laboratory for reimagining theories of displacement that are typically compartmentalized into gentrification studies (occurring primarily on the East Coast) versus immigration studies (occurring primarily on the West Coast), and more broadly between the humanities versus the social sciences.  Our central claim is that these forms of displacement are ontologically linked.  We bring together a number of on-going projects as we seek to integrate the causes and mechanisms of displacement and placemaking to its cultural and aesthetic expressions.
